Craters marked the common, rubble, smoke and flame,
Someone fired a pistol in anger and in vain.
Stunned he walked to Maida Vale and on reaching my front door,
The astronomer said without a qualm "You know this must mean war".

“Nella stessa canzone posso parlare di argomenti storici e fantastici, sia separatamente sia insieme, ma qualunque cosa faccia, cerco di essere molto diretto, qualche volta anche ironico. Quando affronto un soggetto horror, mi sforzo di creare un’atmosfera adatta ad un vecchio film dell’orrore. Non uso sonorità elettroniche perché credo che non abbiano alcuna attinenza con il periodo nel quale colloco le mie canzoni. L’epoca edoardiana e quella vittoriana rappresentano gli scenari ideali per le mie canzoni , ma in genere io introduco quasi sempre un elemento soprannaturale e sinistro. In “Stranger Than Stranger” è un giardino edoardiano nel quale le piante vivono una loro vita propria…In “Demon in a Glass Case” un collezionista vittoriano scopre la parte più malvagia di sé che in un sottoscala sta sfogliando i suoi libri più perversi; la cattura e la chiude dentro una bacheca nel suo studio”
